This September marks 100 years since the birth of John Coltrane, a musician who spent his career in restless pursuit, pushing jazz from bebop’s outer edges into modal exploration and, ultimately, into something closer to prayer. To mark the centennial, KMHD is presenting A Month Supreme, a citywide celebration featuring multiple events across Portland honoring Coltrane’s music, influence, and legacy.

John Coltrane would have turned 100 this September. To celebrate, Portland-based saxophonists Mary-Sue Tobin, Devin Philips, and Tim Willcox will pick selections from Coltrane’s revolutionary catalogue for this one-night only intimate listening event. They will also reflect on how Coltrane’s legacy shaped their craft.

Chicago Tribune Jazz Artist of the Year Isaiah Collier returns to The Old Church Concert Hall with a program exploring the music and legacy of John Coltrane through Collier’s own artistic perspective. Known for connecting the spiritual and exploratory traditions of jazz with a contemporary voice, Collier brings new insight to the work of one of the music’s most influential figures.
