Tuesday, May 27th, Southeast Portland’s Clinton Street Theater will be showing Bertrand Tavernier’s 1986 film Round Midnight– a tale lovingly told around the fuzzy details of saxophonist Lester Young and pianist Bud Powell around the 1950s & 60s New York and Paris scenes. Starring saxophonist Dexter Gordon as the saxophonist Dale Turner (a composite character of Young and Powell and a contemporary of the two) who was nominated for an Academy Award that year alongside a cast of musical heavies sprinkled about like Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Herbie Hancock who also won the Oscar that year for Best Score. KMHD is excited to present this free event at the Clinton Street Theater which is sure to be a can’t miss night amongst jazz fans and movie lovers alike (as well as folks realizing it’s one of the few Bertrand Tavernier films not streaming online right now), so make sure to RSVP!
