Dave Brubeck Memorial

Dave-brubeck-2009-

Dave Brubeck (Dec 6, 1920-Dec 5, 2012) was one of the most celebrated American pianists and composers of the 20th and 21st century.  His contributions were varied, and for many, he was THE gateway to a love for Jazz music from the 1950's onward - helping to develop a mid-century resurgence for Jazz.

Brubeck's sophisticated, swinging sound was easy to "get" - and through his quartet, he found a way to make the music easily appealing to novices, often on their first listen.  This feat, which was no small accomplishment (given the advent of Rock 'n Roll) was punctuated by the fact that he was very much an experimenter in Jazz, playing with odd time signatures and thus creating a very distinctive sound.

This signature sound was a part of Brubeck's musical personality all the way up until the end of his career.  His sunny personality and vibrant attitude were evident to all that had the pleasure of meeting him.

For the rest of the week, we'll be exploring the music of the great Dave Brubeck, may he rest in peace.
