If musical genres could have holidays, May 26th would be one of jazz’s. Miles Dewey Davis was born May 26, 1926 and left an indelible mark on the genre through approach as a trumpeter, bandleader, and innovator through every transformation of his chameleonic career. On the 100th anniversary of his birthday, KMHD is celebrating this artist with a month of events throughout Portland.

KMHD & Hollywood Theater Present: Miles Ahead a 2015 American biographical-drama film directed by Don Cheadle in his feature directorial debut. KMHD’s Anthony Dean-Harris does opening remarks with DJ sets by Nicole D’Amato and Bri Drennon before the movie.

KMHD hosts Rev Shines & Anthony Dean-Harris celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the iconic jazz trumpeter Miles Davis with an evening looking and listening back at some of the musical highlights of his career.

Miles Davis would have turned 100 this May. To celebrate a man who channeled genius through brass, Portland-based trumpeters Justin Copeland and Farnell Newton will pick selections from Davis’ revolutionary catalogue for this one-night only intimate listening event. They will also reflect on how Davis’ legacy shaped their craft.

KMHD Presents: Birth of the Cool

KMHD celebrates Miles Davis’s 100th Birthday with a live performance of “Birth of the Cool” led by Portland trumpeter, Noah Simpson, a nonet of local musicians who will recreate the 1957 classic in its entirety. Opening set by KMHD DJ Derek Smith.
